dermofeel® PA (INCI: Phytic Acid, Aqua) is a 100% naturally derived chelating agent. Sourced from plant material (rice bran), this aqueous solution of Inositol Hexaphosphate (IP6) is a direct natural alternative to synthetic EDTA. It is designed to sequester metal ions that trigger oxidation, discoloration, and foam instability.
Key Benefits and Performance
-
High-Performance Natural Chelator: It inactivates a broad range of metal ions (Mg2+, Ca2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+). Its binding constants at pH 6 are broadly comparable to EDTA, with particularly high efficacy against Iron (Fe3+).
-
Antioxidant Synergy: By “locking up” the metal ions that catalyze oxidative degradation, it significantly extends the protective lifecycle of Tocopherols. This prevents a “protection gap” where antioxidants are consumed prematurely.
-
Foam & Clarity Maintenance: In rinse-off products, it prevents metal ions from reacting with surfactants to form insoluble salts, ensuring consistent foaming and preventing “lime soap” precipitation in hard water.
-
Preservation Support: While not an antimicrobial itself, it supports preservation by removing metal ions that can degrade organic acid preservatives or interfere with antimicrobial activity.
Formulation Guidelines
-
The “pH Dependency” Factor: Chelation efficiency is linked to the deprotonation of phosphate groups. Efficacy is optimized at approximately pH 6.0. Performance is significantly reduced in strongly acidic systems (pH 3–4).
-
Handling & Low pH: The raw material is highly acidic. It should be dissolved in water first before adding any acid-sensitive ingredients to prevent localized destabilization.
-
Incompatibilities & Warnings:
-
W/O Emulsions: Not suitable for systems relying on divalent cations (like MgSO_4) for structural stability.
-
Color Shifts: Can cause a pink discoloration in the presence of iron ions, particularly in formulas containing Avobenzone.
-
Raw Material Color: The liquid may darken over time due to natural organic traces; this does not affect performance or the color of the finished product at recommended dosages.
