Potassium gluconate

Potassium Gluconate is a high-purity mineral salt of gluconic acid. In cosmetic science, it serves as a multifunctional “green” auxiliary, primarily valued as a biodegradable chelating agent and a sodium-free buffering agent. By sequestering trace metal ions and stabilizing formulation pH, it protects the structural and aesthetic integrity of complex aqueous systems.

Key Benefits and Performance

  • Precision Chelation: Effectively binds transition metal ions, particularly Iron (Fe3+) and Copper (Cu2+). This prevents these metals from catalyzing the oxidation of unsaturated lipids and fragile fragrance components.

  • Preservative Synergy: By depriving microorganisms of the metal ions required for their metabolic enzymes, it acts as a functional booster, improving the “kill rate” of primary preservative systems.

  • Sodium-Free Buffering: Provides excellent pH-regulating capacity without increasing the sodium load of a formula. This is particularly advantageous for maintaining the stability of certain thickeners or active ingredients sensitive to high ionic strength.

  • Skin Protection: As a mineral salt of an alpha-hydroxy acid (gluconic acid), it offers mild humectant properties and supports the skin’s natural mineral balance.

  • Formula Longevity: Prevents common stability issues such as product discoloration (pinking/browning) and the development of off-odors (rancidity)

Potassium gluconate is used in cosmetics mainly as a chelating and skin-protecting mineral salt that also serves as a sodium‑free buffering agent. It binds metal ions (like iron and copper) to improve formula stability, prevent discoloration, and support preservative efficacy in emulsions, serums, cleansers, and oral care.
