Evicide® hydrosens is a nature-identical, multifunctional antioxidant and calming ingredient with preservative-boosting properties. Its pH-independent efficacy makes it a flexible choice for a variety of cosmetic applications—including serums, lotions, and cleansers—when formulated alongside other antimicrobial multifunctionals or preservatives.
Key Benefits & Performance
Cost-Effective at Low Inclusion: Delivers multifunctional benefits at low use levels, keeping formulation raw-material costs minimal while preserving room for claim actives.
pH-Independent Antimicrobial Activity: Evicide® hydrosens performs reliably across acidic and near-neutral ranges. In challenge testing at 0.7%, it demonstrated reductions across all test microorganisms (with the exception of A Brasiliensis) in both rinse-off (pH 6.5) and W/O emulsion (pH 5.3) formats.
Dual Antioxidant Protection: Powered by an active phenolic group that neutralizes free radicals, it protects the formulation in-pack against oxidative stress (ideal for preserving unsaturated oils and oxidation-prone actives) while supporting the skin against environmental oxidative damage.
Soothing Properties: The anti-irritant benefit is attributed to inhibition of COX-2 activity inside the skin, which helps to decrease skin irritation, making it of interest for sensitive skin formulations.
Evidence: the anti-inflammatory mechanism — NF-κB signalling, COX-2 inhibition and cytokine suppression — is well supported by systemic pharmacology data. No controlled topical human clinical trial testing hydroxyacetophenone specifically as a skin-soothing active was identified. The commercial claim rests on unpublished in vitro data plus extrapolation from systemic animal studies.
Formulation Guidelines
- Use Level: Register to discover.
- pH Range: No adjustment required (efficacy is completely pH-independent).
- Incorporation: Dispersible in water. Dissolution can be accelerated with gentle heating of the water phase, or by pre-dissolving in surfactants or diols prior to addition. It is stable at standard processing temperatures and can be added directly into the hot phase.
- Sensory & Compatibility: Does not negatively impact surfactant or polymer networks. Can be incorporated into most existing aqueous bases without requiring chassis reformulation.
