Cosphaderm® PA ECONAT

Cosphaderm® PA ECONAT (INCI: Phytic Acid, Aqua) is a 100% natural, high-performance chelating agent. Supplied as an aqueous solution, it is derived from the “soak water” of corn or rice bran—a process that exemplifies circular beauty and agricultural upcycling. As a direct plant-based alternative to synthetic EDTA, it offers a sustainable way to manage metal ions that can otherwise compromise the stability and aesthetics of cosmetic formulations.

Key Benefits and Performance

  • Powerful Natural Chelation: Phytic acid is a multidentate ligand that effectively sequesters divalent and trivalent metal ions. By “locking up” these ions, it prevents them from reacting with other formulation components.

  • Antioxidant & ROS Inhibition: It provides significant antioxidative benefits by inhibiting the formation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). This protects sensitive oils and active ingredients from oxidative rancidity.

  • Color Stability: It is highly effective at reducing or preventing the unsightly discoloration (yellowing or browning) that occurs when metal impurities react with botanical extracts or certain preservatives.

  • Preservation Strategy Support: By depriving microorganisms of the trace minerals they need for metabolic function, it acts as a functional “hurdle,” making the primary preservation system more effective.

  • Broad pH Applicability: Unlike many natural actives, it remains functional across a wide pH range, offering formulators flexibility in both acidic and near-neutral products.

Formulation Guidelines

  • Handling & pH: As an aqueous solution of phytic acid, the raw material has a very low pH. It should be handled with care and added to the water phase, typically at the beginning of the process.
