Evicide® Potassium Sorbate eco (INCI: Potassium Sorbate) is a 100% natural-origin preservative. While most commercial potassium sorbate is derived from petrochemical feedstocks, this eco-grade is sourced entirely from cassava. It provides a natural, alternative for formulators who require the reliable antifungal performance of an Annex V-listed preservative without relying on synthetic chemistry. Supplied as an off-white granulated solid, it offers excellent water solubility and ease of handling.
Key Benefits and Performance
-
Sustainable Cassava Sourcing: This ingredient addresses a major gap in the market by providing a plant-derived version of one of the world’s most widely used preservatives.
-
Potent Antifungal Activity: Rated “very good” against moulds and “good” against yeasts, it is a specialist in preventing fungal spoilage. Its performance is consistent with the well-established literature on sorbic acid as a powerful antifungal agent.
-
Hurdle Technology Essential: While it provides moderate antibacterial protection, it is designed to be paired with complementary antibacterial actives (such as Sodium Levulinate) to achieve true broad-spectrum coverage.
-
High Purity & Solubility: The granulated format ensures low dust during manufacturing and rapid dissolution in the water phase, making it ideal for high-speed production.
Formulation Guidelines
-
The “pH Rule”: Activity is strictly pH-dependent. It converts in situ to active undissociated sorbic acid at acidic levels. While effective between pH register to find out below, higher dosages are required at the upper end of this range to maintain efficacy.
-
Regulatory Limit: In the EU (Annex V, entry 50), the maximum concentration is 0.6% expressed as sorbic acid (which corresponds to approximately 0.74% as potassium sorbate).
-
Processing: Fully water-soluble. It can be added to the water phase under stirring, heated up to 80°C, or introduced before homogenization.
