SharoSENSE™ Plus 181-N represents an innovative approach to “Clean Beauty” preservation. It utilizes Maltol—a naturally occurring organic compound (GRAS/FEMA listed)—which provides masking and chelating properties that drive its antimicrobial character. This is paired with Polyquaternium-80, a cationic polymer that adds emulsifying and conditioning value to the finished product.
Key Benefit: Meets USP/EP Category 1 criteria at low use levels while providing sensory enhancement
Performance & Clinical Efficacy
-
Rapid Microbial Reduction: In both face cream and surfactant cleanser formats (pH 6), bacteria and C. albicans were reduced to <10 cfu/g by Day 2.
-
Broad-Spectrum Support: Full challenge test data confirms efficacy against S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, A. brasiliensis, and C. albicans.
-
Dermal Safety: A 48-hour patch test at 1.0% on adult subjects with sensitive skin found the system to be non-irritant.
-
Versatility: Water-soluble and compatible with both cationic and anionic formulations.
Formulation & Handling Guidelines
Because Maltol is a natural chelator, specific precautions are required to maintain product aesthetics.
To achieve the best results, do not add the product directly to the main vessel. Instead, follow this sequence:
-
Pre-dilution: Mix the required dose of SharoSENSE™ Plus 181-N with 10–15% water.
-
Heating: Preferably heat this pre-mix slightly to 40–45°C to ensure full homogenization of the Maltol and Polyquaternium-80.
-
Timing: Add this phase to the main vessel at the last stage of production, ideally just before the final cooling phas
Maltol possesses metal chelating properties, which contribute to its antimicrobial activity but can also cause light peach discolouration if metal ion traces are present (from water, raw materials or stainless-steel equipment). The manufacturer recommends including a chelating agent (GLDA, Sodium Phytate or Phytic Acid) at the primary water stage.
