Cosphaderm® CHA

Cosphaderm® CHA (INCI: Caprylhydroxamic Acid) is a 100% natural, coconut-derived multifunctional active. As the hydroxamic acid derivative of caprylic acid, it is a unique molecule that occupies a strategic position in natural preservation. It functions as both a potent fungistatic agent and a high-performance chelator, offering a sustainable, crystalline alternative to synthetic preservation boosters and EDTA.

Key Benefits and Performance

  • The “pH-Independent” Organic Acid: Unlike traditional organic acids (e.g., Sorbic or Benzoic acid) which require an acidic environment to work, Cosphaderm® CHA remains undissociated even at neutral pH. This provides an unusually broad effective range, making it a rare natural solution for high-pH formulations.

  • Specialist Antifungal Defense: It delivers exceptionally strong protection against yeasts and moulds, which are often the most difficult microorganisms to control in natural “preservative-free” systems.

  • In-Situ Chelation: Its molecular structure allows it to sequester essential trace metal ions (Fe3+, Cu2+). This dual-action provides two major benefits:

    1. Antimicrobial Boosting: It “starves” microbes of the iron and minerals needed for growth.

    2. Oxidative Stability: It prevents metal-catalyzed oxidation, protecting the color and scent of the finished product.

  • Synergistic Powerhouse: When used as a “hurdle” in a preservation strategy, it dramatically increases the efficacy of other antimicrobials, allowing for a lower overall concentration of active ingredients.

Formulation Guidelines

  • The “Antibacterial” Partner: While it is a specialist in yeast and mould control, it is relatively weaker against bacteria. For full broad-spectrum security, the supplier recommends pairing it with Cosphaderm® Sodium LAAS or Cosphaderm® GMCY

  • Suitable for Baby care up to 0.15 %
