Evicide® magnolia (INCI: Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract) is a 100% natural, high-purity botanical extract. Standardized to a minimum of 98% active content of Magnolol and Honokiol, it represents a potent concentration of two biphenolic neolignan compounds. This multifunctional ingredient is a staple of “Green Chemistry” because it offers both antioxidant protection and a broad-acting antimicrobial boost, making it an excellent choice for modern, plant-based formulations.
Key Benefits and Performance
-
Total pH Independence: Unlike many natural preservation actives that require an acidic environment, Evicide® magnolia remains effective across the full cosmetic pH range. This makes it a versatile solution for neutral or alkaline products.
-
Broad-Acting Antimicrobial Booster: It shows exceptional activity against moulds and good activity against yeasts. It also provides a moderate boost against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
-
Potent Antioxidant Activity: The phenolic structure of Magnolol and Honokiol protects the formula from oxidative stress. This helps maintain the integrity of sensitive botanical oils and active ingredients.
-
Targeted Anti-Acne Efficacy: It is highly recognized for its performance in acne-prone skin formulations. Even at low dosages, it helps manage the bacteria associated with blemish-prone complexions.
-
Ethnobotanical Heritage: It bridges traditional knowledge with modern science. Magnolia officinalis has a centuries-long history of use in traditional medicine and is now a leading natural alternative in sustainable cosmetic preservation.
Formulation Guidelines
-
Solubility & Incorporation: for successful use, it must be dissolved in an organic solvent such as Pentylene Glycol (Evicide® G 5 eco), ethanol, or other glycols before being added to the oil phase.
-
Heat Sensitivity: It can be added directly to the heated oil phase. However, prolonged heating should be avoided to preserve the integrity of the active neolignans.
-
Strategy Note: It is not a standalone broad-spectrum preservative. It should be combined with other antibacterial agents to ensure full microbial protection (ISO 11930)
