Verstatil® SL non GMO (INCI: Aqua, Sodium Levulinate, Potassium Sorbate) is a liquid preservative blend with nature identical Potassium sorbate. It pairs the skin-conditioning and antibacterial power of plant derived Sodium Levulinate with the robust antifungal protection of Potassium Sorbate, offering a high-performance “green” staple for certified natural cosmetics.
Key Benefits and Performance
-
High-Efficiency “Hurdle” Synergy: It provides a strong defense against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. When used as part of a multi-component system, it delivers comprehensive protection for water-rich formulas.
-
Processing Versatility: Supplied as a colorless to brownish liquid, it is both hot and cold processable. It can be added at any stage of manufacturing, offering significant flexibility in large-scale production.
-
Potent Antifungal Support: In combination with a co-active, it achieves excellent control over yeasts and moulds, ensuring the long-term shelf stability of organic formulations.
Formulation Guidelines
-
The “pH Constraint”: Like all organic acid blends, its efficacy is pH-dependent.
-
Electrolyte & Stability Management: The blend contains electrolytes. Formulators must ensure their emulsifier system is electrolyte-compatible to avoid viscosity loss.
-
W/O Emulsion Note: In Water-in-Oil systems, use MgSO4 or NaCl as your stabilizing electrolytes. Avoid ZnSO4, as it has been shown to cause flocculation (clumping) with this specific blend.
-
Color Stability Warning: Unlike the benzoate-based Verstatil® BL, this sorbate-based variant may cause a yellowish discoloration in surfactant-based or aqueous products. This should be carefully evaluated during stability testing.
-
Emulsion Boosting: To ensure total coverage in complex lotions, it is highly recommended to pair this blend with an antimicrobial wetting agent like Dermosoft® GMCY MB.
