Explore Broad Spectrum Green Ingredients for Cosmetic Preservation

Broad-spectrum antimicrobial ingredients are those that protect a formulation against the full range of microbial threats—bacteria (both Gram-positive and Gram-negative), yeasts and moulds—rather than a single group of organisms. This complete coverage is the goal of any effective preservation system.

These ingredients may be Annex V preservatives, listed and regulated specifically for their preservative function, or blends of multifunctionals that deliver broad-spectrum activity while also contributing other benefits to the formula. Each route has its own regulatory, labelling and formulation implications.

Whichever you choose, broad-spectrum protection can only be confirmed in the finished product: the same ingredient can perform very differently depending on pH, water activity, packaging and the rest of the formula. Always validate performance in your own formulation through appropriate challenge testing rather than relying on supplier claims alone.
